About Kataragama Temple
Kataragama is one of Sri Lanka’s most sacred pilgrimage destinations, revered by Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and the indigenous Vedda community. The main shrine is dedicated to Lord Kataragama (Skanda/Murugan), known for granting blessings and fulfilling vows.
The temple complex features ancient shrines, vibrant rituals, daily poojas, and a peaceful setting surrounded by forest and the Menik Ganga (River of Gems).

Kataragama Festival (Esala Perahera)
The annual Esala Festival is one of Sri Lanka’s most spectacular cultural celebrations. Pilgrims from around the country walk for days to reach Kataragama, carrying offerings and performing age-old rituals.
- Fire Walking: Devotees walk on blazing coal beds as a sacred vow.
- Kavadi Dance: Devotees carry decorated frames while dancing in devotion.
- Traditional Drumming: Rhythmic beats echo throughout the temple grounds.
- Processions: Elephants, dancers, torch bearers and musicians join the nightly perahera.
- River Offerings: Pilgrims bathe and make offerings at Menik Ganga.

- Dress modestly — shoulders and knees must be covered.
- Avoid large bags during the festival due to security checks.
- Best time to visit the temple: early morning or evening pooja.
