About Kataragama Temple

Kataragama is one of Sri Lanka’s most sacred pilgrimage destinations, revered by Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and the indigenous Vedda community. The main shrine is dedicated to Lord Kataragama (Skanda/Murugan), known for granting blessings and fulfilling vows.

Kataragama Festival (Esala Perahera)

The annual Esala Festival is one of Sri Lanka’s most spectacular cultural celebrations. Pilgrims from around the country walk for days to reach Kataragama, carrying offerings and performing age-old rituals.

• Fire Walking: Devotees walk on blazing coal beds as a sacred vow.
• Kavadi Dance: Devotees carry decorated frames while dancing in devotion.
• Traditional Drumming: Rhythmic beats echo throughout the temple grounds.
• Processions: Elephants, dancers, torch bearers and musicians join the nightly perahera.

Kataragama Festival Calendar: 2026/2027 Key Dates

The Kataragama Esala Festival is one of Sri Lanka's most intense and multi-faith religious celebrations, drawing Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim, and indigenous Vedda devotees. Here are the key dates and rituals to plan around:

🔥 2026 Festival (July–August): The annual Esala Perahera festival runs for 14 days culminating on the Esala Full Moon Poya. The 2026 festival concluded in August. The final night features the dramatic water-cutting ceremony at Menik Ganga river at dawn.

🔥 2027 Festival (Projected August 3–17): Based on the lunar calendar, the 2027 Kataragama Esala Perahera is projected to run from approximately August 3 to August 17, 2027, ending on the Nikini Poya full moon day. Exact dates are confirmed by temple authorities 2–3 months prior.

🔥 Fire Walking & Kavadi: The most dramatic rituals include fire walking (participants cross burning coal beds barefoot), kavadi (devotees pierce their bodies with hooks and skewers as acts of devotion), and the nightly perahera processions. These rituals intensify during the final five nights of the festival.

💡 Visiting Outside Festival: Kataragama temple complex is active year-round. Daily pujas occur at 4:30 AM, 10:30 AM, and 6:30 PM. The sacred Menik Ganga bathing ritual draws pilgrims daily. Non-festival visits offer a more contemplative experience without the extreme crowds.
